Friday the 13th? I got a whole book about that!

book covers

It’s Friday the 13th, and that means it’s an EXCELLENT time to pre-order the first book in my new Genius Factor series, a series where Friday the 13th plays a major part! You see, Nate Bannister is a genius. I mean he’s SMART. And not just smart for a 5th grader. He’s the smartest person who’s ever lived… SO smart that he gets a bit bored, and so every Friday the 13th he does three different things that… aren’t smart. I mean NOT smart. This time, among other things, he’s made a giant invisible cat. It goes… WRONG. So wrong.

The Genius Factor books feature Nate and his Friday the 13th problems, all seen through the eyes of his adventurous classmate, Delphine Cooper. Unfortunately, it’s not just the Friday the 13th problems they have to contend with, because… together… Nate and Delphine are the last hope against the Red Death Tea Society, an organization of genius assassins bent on taking over the world and also making some really top-notch high-quality tea.

It’s a wild ride. With a giant invisible cat. And tea.

The first book in the Genius Factor series can be pre-ordered… HERE

Here’s the feeling you’ll have if you read this book!

GENIUS FACTOR book covers: revealed!

book covers

So… here they are! The covers for the American and UK editions of one of my MAJOR projects of late. Genius Factor is the story of awkward super-genius Nate Bannister, as seen through the eyes of his sixth grade classmate, Delphine Cooper. Together, they fight a secret war against the Red Death Tea Society, a society of genius super assassins who also happen to brew some pretty darn good tea.

The first book, “How To Capture An Invisible Cat” comes out in March of 2016, and then four more books will follow at 9 month intervals, published by Bloomsbury. I have a LOT of fun writing these all-out constant adventure stories, and while they’re marketed for younger readers, I think they’re fitting for everyone who likes cracking a smile, and wondering what’s next, always what’s next. Plus… there’s a dog.

Bandette & I Was The Cat both nominated for Eisner Awards!

Screen shot 2015-04-21 at 12.53.49 PM

No, Bandette, you are wrong. The news is not fearsome. It is, instead, wonderful.

I’m proud to announce that Bandette has been nominated for three Eisner awards. The award categories are…

Best Continuing Series: Bandette

Best Digital/Webcomic: Bandette

Best Painter/Multimedia Artist: Colleen Coover / Bandette

Colleen and I could not be happier. Thanks so much to Chris and Allison at Monkeybrain, and to everyone at ComiXology, and to Brendan Wright and the rest of the fine folks at Dark Horse Comics. And, of course, to everyone who reads and enjoys the adventures of our charming thief, Bandette.

Screen shot 2015-02-03 at 11.20.30 AM

And, in addition, I’m super pleased that another of my projects received an Eisner nomination!

I Was The Cat

I Was The Cat, by me and Benjamin Dewey, was nominated for Best Publication For Kids (ages 8-12). It’s a real honor for Ben and I to be nominated. We consider the book to be for everyone, no matter what age, and it’s certainly a complex book full of world history and drama and cats. Some of which die. Man… one gets stabbed with a bayonet. Ben drew the hell out of that.

I’d love to thank editors Jill Beaton and Robin Herrera, as well as the whole cast of the fine folks at Oni, for helping us get this book out there.

And, HUGE thanks to all the readers and retailers and everyone in the whole dang industry, no matter what side of the table you’re on. It’s a great time for comics, and I think this must have been one of THE hardest years to come up with the nominations, so I’m even more humbled that my books received four nominations. Thank you, everyone!

And then there were two… volumes of Bandette!

Screen shot 2015-02-03 at 11.20.30 AM

Yep! Today marks the day that Colleen Coover and I, in conjunction with Dark Horse Comics, release the second volume of Bandette. We’re super happy about this, because in some ways it feels like having two volumes out is like having five times as many collections, when in reality it’s only like… what… three times? I’m not sure. I’m no good at math. But I am good at writer-ing, and Colleen is even super better at drawer-ing, and we’re really proud of what Bandette has turned into. And, if you’ve been already reading on ComiXology, where Bandette is first released, there’s still lots more in this volume to dig into. There are Urchin Stories by Jonathan Hill, Lucy Bellwood, Ron Randall, Patrick Scherberger, Sheli Hay, Emi Lenox, and my Plants vs. Zombies partner, Ron Chan! Plus, there’s a prose story by yours truly, with spot illustrations by Colleen. The story, “The Cards On The Table,” gives a secret background look at some of what’s been going on, and sets up what’s going to happen in the next storyline, entitled, “The House of the Green Mask.”

There’s also a real life look at some of what Bandette steals in the comic, and there’s a script sample and character designs pages, for a behind-the-scenes look at how Bandette is made.

Screen shot 2015-04-14 at 7.01.44 PM

And of course there’s action o’ plenty!

Screen shot 2015-04-14 at 7.01.19 PM

You don’t need to knock first… just come on in to the second volume of Bandette, available at all comic shops TODAY, and then bookstores soon after… on April 28th!

Screen shot 2015-04-14 at 7.01.31 PM

Oh, there CERTAINLY is. In fact, there are several thieves in the house of Absinthe, the dread leader of FINIS. Will they be discovered? Will Bandette forget to even hide?

Screen shot 2015-04-14 at 7.01.57 PM

Oh no! Is this the end of Bandette?

Screen shot 2015-04-14 at 7.00.51 PM

Oh Heloise, what have you done?

Screen shot 2015-04-14 at 7.03.02 PM

And what has Bandette found up her sleeve? All of these mysteries and more are to be revealed in Bandette, volume two, available today at all comic stores, and then in regular ol’ (still super cool) bookstores in the next couple weeks.

Don’t let the good things in life pass you by!

MY BEAUTIFUL “BUY MY STUFF” HOLIDAY GIFT GUIDE

Hey! You done with your holiday buying yet?

tumblr_mpuhxpnRGm1qmp5efo1_500

Well, ARE you?

If not, no problem! As we all know, giving the gift of “Paul Tobin” written novels or graphic novels is a tradition that stretches back for several centuries, and is perhaps the most important moment in any holiday season. But, which of my projects is right for you and your loved ones? All of them, really. They’re all perfect for you, and were in fact written specifically with you in mind, and weren’t at all written by a severely cookie-dependent barely-functioning shut-in with a slew of borderline mental problems. I swear! Okay, you got me, but despite all that, I think I know the holiday spirit when I see it.

Screen shot 2014-12-08 at 7.51.16 PM

Santa!

tumblr_lg9rp33W471qb8ugro1_500

And his elves!

Screen shot 2014-12-08 at 7.49.05 PM

Okay then, let’s get to the shopping!

And, before I list all the cool things you could buy for YOURSELF (or others, I guess) for the holidays, let me list some handy links. And, all kidding aside, I’m very proud of all of these projects, and I really appreciate the love that I’ve gotten back for them. Thank you, people… you’re all pretty excellent.

BANDETTE VOL 1: PRESTO

BANDETTE VOL 1: STEALERS KEEPERS (preorder)

GINGERBREAD GIRL:

The above links are to Amazon, but… PLEASE… if you can buy from your local stores, DO SO! And now, here’s a better look at these books n’ graphic novels…

BANDETTE

Screen shot 2014-12-08 at 6.52.19 PM

This is the Eisner-award-winning series focused on the adventures of Bandette… the greatest thief in the world! Bandette is illustrated by the Eisner-award-winning and Paul-Tobin-wife-ing cartoonist, Colleen Coover! It features a mix of our favorite things, from vintage heist films, to Tintin, Modesty Blaise, Diabolik, and adventure… adventureadventure.

Screen shot 2014-12-08 at 6.52.54 PM

Motorcycle / moped chases!

Big-nosed special detectives with colorful language!

Bandette volume 2 is on the way!

COLDER

colder-1-cvr-17260

Ahh, here’s some of my writing in a whole different direction than Bandette. Colder is a look at insanity, at horror that unsettles you, the story of what went horribly wrong in the early LSD experiments at Sansid Asylum, and the “Hungry World” that it opened. Art for Colder is by the incredibly talented Juan Ferreyra. The above image is to the first issue, but we loved it so much we used it for the trade collection of the first 5 issues, too!

Screen shot 2014-12-08 at 6.59.16 PM

Oh look. The Hungry World. It is look like a nice place, right?

Screen shot 2014-12-08 at 6.58.38 PM

Nimble Jack. He’s not bad… he’s just hungry. Okay… maybe he’s bad, too.

COLDERBS-MOCK-UP-R4-600x923

And don’t forget to check the 2nd of the planned 3 arcs, featuring the unsettling Swivel, as pictured in the above image, which you could probably use on a Christmas card!

I WAS THE CAT

Screen shot 2014-12-08 at 7.57.18 PM

This my graphic novel with that talented guitar-playing artistic moppet known as Ben Dewey.

Screen shot 2014-12-08 at 7.57.33 PM

The back cover has a pretty good rundown of what it’s all about, so I cheated and put it here.

Screen shot 2014-12-08 at 7.05.29 PM

A talking cat. Is he good, or evil? Ha ha ha… silly question. Cats are evil.

Screen shot 2014-12-08 at 7.05.16 PM

I still kinda want a talking cat, evil or not.

Screen shot 2014-12-08 at 7.06.54 PM

The I WAS THE CAT graphic novel is a walk through Burma’s past lives, as well as the combined love of history shared by me and illustrator Ben Dewey.

PREPARE TO DIE!

PREPARE TO DIE!

Look! It’s my first novel. It’s the story of what rather unexpectedly happens when a hero’s arch-nemesis yells “Prepare To Die!” I’ve long wanted to delve deeper into the characterization of super-heroes, and this novel allowed me to explore MUCH further. LOTS more novels from me on the way, including a middle readers series starting in early 2016.

GINGERBREAD GIRL

gingerbread_girl_cover_sm_lg

Another project with Colleen Coover! Gingerbread Girl is a mystery of whether the lead character, Annah, is insane, or if her father actually DID extract a portion of her brain and make… in mad scientist fashion… a sister. And it’s all told by a series of unreliable narrators, so the mystery deepens!

Screen shot 2014-12-08 at 7.02.48 PM

Unreliable they might be, but I like them.

gingerbreadch0103-1295639189

Here’s black and white art, but the graphic novel has tones, similar to the dog n’ pigeon panel above.

Screen shot 2014-12-08 at 7.03.50 PM

Gingerbread cookie sex!

PLANTS VS. ZOMBIES

Screen shot 2014-12-08 at 7.08.34 PM

Man, who doesn’t love Plants vs. Zombies? I’ve had a lot of fun first creating, and then exploring the greater Plants vs. Zombies world.

Screen shot 2014-12-08 at 7.09.16 PM

Art by my pal, Ron Chan!

xeno-me

Don’t forget that I’m writing lots of other things, too. If you’re at the comic stores, pick up such projects at Prometheus, Jungle Jim, Turok, Witcher, Angry Birds, and many others!

Screen shot 2014-12-08 at 6.57.17 PM

Your author, gettin’ into that ol’ holiday spirit.

Screen shot 2014-04-17 at 8.31.16 AM

Merry Christmas!

And I am sorry that I ruin everything.

Colder vol. 2: The Bad Seed! This week!

COLDERBS-MOCK-UP-R4-600x923

It’s FINALLY time for Juan Ferreyra and I to continue the story of Declan and Reece, in our Eisner and Bram Stoker nominated horror story… Colder.

We know you’ve just been waiting… and waiting. Us, too!

tumblr_nby198dadW1s2wio8o1_500

Juan and I have been working hard behind the scenes, though, deciding how we wanted the next two arcs to play out. The first step was coming up with this fine fellow.

Screen shot 2014-10-21 at 10.32.50 AM

His name is Swivel. He’s swell. Invite him to all your parties. Here’s some art-in-progress of him being swell.

Screen shot 2014-10-21 at 10.27.58 AM

See? Swell. The above sequence turned out really incredibly well. Juan does an AMAZING job of bringing our warped ideas to life. I couldn’t be happier than to work with him.

FullSizeRender(1)

Our Bram Stoker nomination only talked about me. Ridiculous. I took a marker to it and served justice. Comics are a team sport. Editors Scott Allie and Daniel Chabon have been a huge part of Colder as well, and of course Nate Piekos, our letterer. All one team.

Screen shot 2014-10-21 at 10.53.28 AM

An upcoming page, with Declan, Reece, and foreshadowing.

An, in closing, COLDER VOL TWO, THE BAD SEED, IS OUT THIS WEEK!!! And, why should you read it? Well, for the same reason that Juan and I make the comic…
