Colder! So what if it’s summer?

Juan Ferreyra and I have been hard at work on the 2nd arc of Colder, the ever-so-charming psychological horror-thriller that makes people glare at us.

Colder trade

One of the great enjoyments of selling Colder at conventions is watching kids walk by, staring at the cover, and then trying to imitate it.

Colder… published by the fine folks at Dark Horse Comics, was nominated for a Bram Stoker award, and is currently up for an Eisner. Juan and I are very proud of our work, here. We want to create real horror… not just gross “shock” horror, but moments that really get under your skin and make you wake up in the middle of night, feeling like Something Is Wrong. I’m hugely influenced by the deeply unsettling Korean and Japanese horror films / comics, the grinding tension, the strong characterization, so you’ll see a lot of that in Colder.

The first volume of Colder is currently available (CLICK HERE!)  and Juan and I will be starting up the 2nd arc towards the end of this year, introducing a new unsettling bastard of a villain, a gentleman who goes by the name of Swivel.

Here’s a photo of that handsome rascal Juan himself, with a page-in-progress from the second arc, featuring Swivel.

An image from the 1st arc, where Declan and Reece are traveling between the “real” world, and that of what we call the Hungry World.

More art from the 1st series, featuring Nimble Jack getting the upper hand on Declan.

So go get yourself a copy of Colder, and then never sleep again. You’re welcome!

Musing about candy bars

One day, if we can make Bandette an international institution, I think it would be great if we actually made the Chocobolik candy bars that Bandette is always eating.

Screen shot 2014-01-02 at 11.27.12 AM

The name of this candy bar, incidentally, is inspired by the “Diabolik” comics / movies, etc.

Bandette AND Adventure Time vs. Gorillas blowing you up

Screen shot 2013-10-20 at 9.31.51 AM

NO! The gorillas will NOT blow you up, not if you protect yourself with LITERATURE! And tomorrow, on the glorious day of January 8th, 2014… literature will KEEP YOU SAFE FROM THE GORILLAS!

wha monkey

Yes. And that’s because, after a long wait, it’s FINALLY time for Colleen Coover and I to present, the SIXTH episode of BANDETTE.

Screen shot 2014-01-07 at 12.11.33 PM

Ahhh, so pretty. But… what will be INSIDE that cover? Well, how about…

Screen shot 2014-01-07 at 12.14.33 PM

Screen shot 2014-01-07 at 12.15.00 PM

Screen shot 2014-01-07 at 12.15.16 PM

And… PRESTO!

But that’s not all for tomorrow, because Colleen and I have also teamed up on another adventure. ADVENTURE TIME, to be exact!

Screen shot 2014-01-07 at 12.23.57 PM

ADVENTURE TIME: FLIP SIDE is a 6 issue series co-written by me n’ Colleen, with art by our most excellent friend, Wook Jin Clark. Here’s a couple of preview pages.

AdvTime_FlipSide_01_Preview7

AdvTime_FlipSide_01_Preview8

I’m really proud of the Pancake Princesses and you should probably not live your life without this comic. You’ll be able to find it at all better comic stores, and, although this next part is not true at all… IT’S ALSO BEING SHOT TO MARS AS PART OF CARE PACKAGE TO THE MARS ROVER!

Bandette, of course, is available online. All the chapters can be found at ComiXology, and a hardcover collection of our Eisner Award winning series can be found at comic stores (PLEASE support them) or online HERE. Remember, if you don’t read literature… the gorillas win.

A Merry Week O’ Tobin Writings: Prepare To Die! (the novel, I mean)

And, it’s Friday. All this week, I’ve been crafting a daily showcase of recently released works by yours truly. These are books that you could be reading for the holidays, or bestowing as gifts to those people you love, tolerate, desperately desire, to those you have picked in the office Secret Santa exchange, to those you are trying to impress, or to those you need to pretentiously prove you’re better by showing them that you read quality literature, while they’re still rolling around in copies of Mr. Tinkles and the Suspicious Stain. Monday was the Colder trade collection. Tuesday was the Plants Vs. Zombies HC. Wednesday was the Eisner-award-winning Bandette, yesterday was the Bionic Woman collection, and today, today… is my highly acclaimed / treasured novel… Prepare To Die, which came out in trade paperback format just a couple months back.

PTD cover

Prepare To Die is the story of a superhero who, defeated, receives the cliche “Prepare to DIE!” line from his arch-nemesis, but, in my book, he agrees, and is given two weeks to get his life in order and… prepare to die. What happens in those two weeks is the deeper characterization I’ve always wanted to work with in comics, but space never permitted. And you might as well start reading my novels now, because there are more on the way, and you DO want to read my novels now, so that when I’m selling millions of copies you can shrug and tell your friends, “Yeah, Tobin? Been reading his books for years.”

Visit your local bookstores for Prepare To Die, or order it online at the following link.

YES: I WANT TO READ TOBIN’S NOVEL BEFORE MY FRIENDS DO, BECAUSE ALTHOUGH I DO LOVE THEM I STILL FEEL THE NEED TO BE “COOLER” THAN THEY ARE.

And… don’t forget the rest of the week’s Tobin-centric offerings!

Screen shot 2013-12-19 at 10.26.03 AM

I grew up watching reruns of the Bionic Man, and vastly preferred the Bionic Woman because A): she was prettier, and B): I think she was a better actor than Lee Majors.

Lee Majors

Sorry, Lee… but it’s just true. Anyway… it was a lot of fun to write a romping adventure story starring the Bionic Woman, published by the fine folks at Dynamite Comics. The collection is available at those comic book stores not scheduled for destruction by Godzilla, and from many online distributors.

HERE’S ONE OF THEM:

What can be said about Bandette? She’s just the devil-may-care best thief in the world. She’s the candy-bar eating adventuress. She’s my all time favorite creation, featuring art by the Eisner award winning cartoonist, Colleen Coover. Bandette has won or stolen the hearts of every one who’s run across her, and her adventures are suitable for all ages, in my little ol’ opinion.

The Bandette adventures are SUPER CHEAP… 99 cents a pop at the wonderful ComiXology. As for the hardcover, I highly recommend you picking up Bandette from your local comic or book store (support local!) but if you can’t find it there, then check the following two links…

It’s a fun adventure romp suitable for the entire family, notable for the awe-sational art by Ron Chan, and for the sense of humor that such notable critics as my mother have described as “wry” and “troubling” and “what have I created, oh god what have I done?”

Both the Colder trade collection and Plants Vs. Zombies: Lawnmageddon are available at all the most pleasant comic and book stores, and here’s a couple links for the PvZ book to make supporting literacy just that much more simple.

Co-creator / artist Juan Ferreyra and I have obviously created a Christmas classic here. The collection includes not only all five issues, but a bonus art gallery and a 2 page intro to the NEXT Colder series, which Juan and I will start releasing quite soon after we finish our upcoming run on the Prometheus comics for the big Dark Horse Comics Prometheus / Aliens / Predator crossover.

Here’s a couple of links to make it easy to nab up a copy of Colder. It’s the holidays! Treat yourself!

Monday was the Colder trade collection. Tuesday was the Plants Vs. Zombies HC. Yesterday was the Eisner-award-winning Bandette, and today is the kick-assedry of the Bionic Woman.
