In honor of what I hope will be only the first of my appearances on the War Rocket Ajax podcast, I’m taking a look at some of the most historically important podcasts down through the ages.

COBRA's initial recruitment video podcast was very successful. Can YOU look at this and not want to run out and kick G. I. Joe in the face? I can't. Call me weak, but... GO COBRA!

Einstein's "You've Got Legs... USE them!" podcast set fashion trends for decades.

Madame de Pompadour's famous, "Bitch, You Ain't All That" podcast not only swayed public opinion in her war of words with Napoleon, but the podcast also contained Madame P's "Shorty's Short in the Shorts," which many scholars consider the first rap song, and that Oscar Wilde cited as a direct influence on his, "Playwrights Gone Wilde" rap opera.

Though very concise in nature, Julius Caesar's "Et tu, Brute" podcast received over 12 million downloads, the YouTube video went viral, and for decades afterwards many of Rome's finest citizens considered it fashionable to use the podcast as their ringtone.

I ran across this image when I was researching for my upcoming Spider-Girl title, which stars Anya Corazon as Spider-Girl. Anya was once known as Arana, of course... thus the connection. I'm pretty much in love with this cover, as it is a sci-fi piece that encompasses the three main tenets of heroic sci-fi adventure. Those tenets being, of course 1) a noble and heroic lead, and 2) the lure of the unknown, represented here by the spaceships, and of course the main element of all great literature.... 3) a toolbox in danger. NOTHING says adventure like a toolbox in distress, and a hero willing to risk life and limb in order to protect that toolbox. I can't even look at this cover without wanting to run off to the hardware store and dispatch the enemies of those innocent toolboxes.

Yes… as many of you already know, I’ll be writing some Conan stories. I’m REALLY looking forward to this, as Conan was one of the staples of my youth, and I’m still a huge fan of that rascally head-cleaving, Pict-kicking, jewel-thieving, harlot-spanking fellow.

I hope everyone that’s been following my work at Marvel gives my Conan writing a look. I’ve been having a good deal of fun, trying to stay true to the spirit of Robert E. Howard. Because of this, I’ve been reading a lot of REH’s material, and the great Conan mags of the seventies and eighties, and generally researching barbarians as a whole. I’ll share a bit of my research, below.

Spider-Girl and I are now Best Friends Forever.

By now a lot of you might know that I had a new ongoing in-continuity title announced at the San Diego Comic Convention. Along with a certain barbarian, Spider-Girl has been one of my major “I can’t tell you about this project” projects for some time, and I’m excited to finally get to talk about it. I really love this cover. Anya Corazon / Spider-Girl looks so amazingly carefree. The second cover will probably just be her glaring at me for what I'm pitting her against in the first issue. Sorry, Anya!

My first work with Spider-Girl will be in Amazing Spider-Man # 648. Seen above is a J. Scott Campbell variant cover. I love how gangly Spider-Girl is. When I was a teenager, I was clumsy enough to trip over particularly feisty ants... but Anya is soaring through the skies. I guess that's why she gets to meet Spider-Man, while I just get the concilation prize of Spider-Man Underoos.

Although Spider-Man Underoos ARE kind of cool. Check out this photo that might as well be me, circa 1980-2009. (I wear A-Team Underoos, now.)

Oh look... it's preview art. This art and the next piece are both by Clayton Henry... my art partner for the Spider-Girl title. These are both partial panels. I will either color these in with my crayons, or I suppose it's possible editor Nate Cosby will hire a colorist. I just bought a new box of Crayolas, though... and I'm ready to show my mad skills.

If I knew how to insert Ennio Morricone music with this image, you'd sure as hell be hearing it right now.

Pencils vs. Inks on one of my fave artists: Aouamri Mohamed

These are the pencils for a page from LA QUÊTE DE L'OISEAU DU TEMPS... by artist Aouamri Mohamed. This stuff is LUSH. One of the benefits of the European method of graphic albums is that they allow the artists greater time to develop the page. Of course, on the flip side, your favorite artist might only produce one work in a year, or even less. I suppose it's much like the American indy scene, except with more money involved.

And here are the inks for the same page. Note the HUGE differences in the pencils and the inks. What's amazing to me about this is how complete the pencils are. Normally, when I see this much difference between pencils and inks, the pencils are very loose... more like layouts than actual drawings. It's an interesting look into Aouamri's process (and care) that he's willing to so thoroughly rework the material.

Just for kicks, one last piece of Aouamri's artwork, because the girls are so pretty.

Eaglehoff brings you… previews

Hello... I'm David Eaglehoff, one of Paul's VERY GOOD friends, here to rock you out with some various previews of his upcoming projects. Before we go any further, let me introduce our blog's new house band.

We are GARVIS, home-dogs! And... ARE... YOU... READY... TO... PAAAAARTYYYYY!!!

That's right, we brought in Garvis, so get ready for some wanton debauchery, but first, let's see those previews.

Here's some Matteo Lolli art from an upcoming issue of Spider-Man. In it, Spider-Man flat out webs a man to a wall, chest first, because it's more humiliating that way... and that's how the Spider-Man rolls. Spider-Man also seems to have an owl with him, and that's pretty fly... but not as sweetly smooth as having his own eagle, the symbol of America.

And here's a preview of Paul's work on his upcoming Hulked Out Heroes: Wolverine vs. Captain America, with art by Jacopo Camagni. I don't want to spoil the plot, but let's just say the two of them don't work out their problems with written dissertations.

And now a look at some Colleen Coover art from Gingerbread Girl, an upcoming original graphic novel to be published by Top Shelf. It's a mesh of sex, psyschoanalysis, and brain surgery. The only thing it's lacking is an eagle.

It does have a pigeon, though.

And a bulldog. And a lot of other narrators. I know that Paul and Colleen are really happy with it, and I just want to say that it gets the David Eaglehoff stamp of approval. So.... when it comes out...

... you should buy it.
