Favorite Female Character # 23: Vampirella

Vampi! She’s from the planet Drakulon, where EVERYBODY is a vampire, and please don’t ask me too many questions about that because it doesn’t make very much sense. But she’s been an interesting character for decades, now… and has a WEALTH of truly great artists, such as Frank Frazetta, Sanjulian, Gonzalo Mayo, and many others.

Vampirella's first appearance. Not bad to start out with a Frazetta cover.

Frazetta actually designed the character. It would have been interesting if Frank had gone into fashion design rather than comics, because that man never put too many clothes on a woman.

More character design from the master.

There was a time when if you didn't have this LIFE-SIZE poster of Vampirella (illustrated by Jose Gonzalez) on your dorm door, then you just didn't count as a man.

Sanjulian was one of Vampi’s best artists, during one of her best periods. The poor girl went through a huge run of truly atrocious comics in the 1990’s, when the “bad girl” craze was so big, and Vampirella fell prey to imbeciles that think “adult” writing means lots of blood and bodies to make it edgy, and artists apparently decided that Vampirella’s costume covered too much of her (?????!!!!) so her costume became little more than a thong. But Sanjulian… ahh… Sanjulian. He was a man (like Frazetta) who could draw a woman in a costume THIS skimpy, and still have her radiate power and class.

A couple Sanjulian versions of the vampire lady.

One thing that's been consistently true throughout the years.... if you happen to be a black panther, you're probably friends with Vampirella.

If there's a pretty woman to be drawn, Bruce Timm will always be there for you, and he'll always do an amazing job. I love how Timm always captures both the strength and graceful innocence of the female form.

Oh, look! Another Frazetta image. Giant reptiles are ALSO Vampirella's friend.

THE “FAVORITE” LIST SO FAR

#25: Scarlet Witch

#24: Chance Falconer

#23: Vampirella

——- DOWN BELOW IS JUST A REHASH OF WHY I’M DOING THIS LIST ———

I’ve been thinking about women, lately. Women characters in comics. Women creators in comics. Female characters in literature. And pretty girls riding around on bicycles or walking along the sidewalk, etc, etc. Because of this, I’ve decided to make An Entirely Useless List. Why is it entirely useless? Because it’s my top 25 female characters from comics and literature, and such lists change at whim and at a breakneck pace. It’s IMPOSSIBLE to quantify favorites… the term favorite is far too malleable. A list of my best friends from high school, for instance, would not include anyone with whom I’m currently in contact. Times change. Still… I’m making the list. Why? I suppose I just like thinking about women.
